Update work week 49 - drilling completed!

6 December 2023

Last week we completed the drilling of the injection well, which has now reached a depth of 2580 meters. This means that the entire drilling phase, including the drilling of the injection and production well, has been successfully completed. The doublet shows promising properties for heat production, as can be read in the article: https://www.omroepdelft.nl/omroepdelft/nieuws/stadswarmte-uit-oude-zeegrond-stap-dichterbij-na-geslaagde-boring

After completion of the drilling, samples were taken from the subsurface (cores), with which researchers from TU Delft can collect valuable data about the geothermal source. Check out the images below to take a closer look at these samples. A total of 80 cores are collected, a result that the TU Delft research team is very satisfied with.

After coring, the casing (steel tube) is placed in the borehole and cemented. Shortly before heat production starts, the end of this tube will be perforated to establish a connection with the rock reservoir.

What are the steps for the near future?

Demobilisation of the derrick

The drilling site will now be deconstructed. First of all, the derrick will be demobilized. The tower is then carefully dismantled and removed in parts, which involves some transport movements. This phase-out phase is expected to last approximately one week.

Redevelopment of the drilling site

After completion of the derrick, the laydown area is thoroughly cleaned up and redesigned according to the original layout. This also includes the reopening of Leeghwaterstraat.

After the completion and redevelopment of the drilling site, we are entering a new phase. In this phase, the above-ground installation will be realized as well as the connection to the heating network. We will continue to keep everyone informed of developments and the exact timeline via our website.
