Where does Delft’s sustainable heat come from? Come and see for yourself!

Open Energy Day Saturday September 19, 2026

Since February 2026, the Geothermie Delft source has been running at full capacity. The result? Clean, local energy straight from our own soil (at a depth of no less than 2.3 kilometers!). On Saturday, September 19, we are opening our doors during Open Energy Day.

Drop by during Open Energy Day and discover what geothermal energy means for you, the TU Delft, and our city!

On Saturday, September 19, Geothermie Delft is opening its doors during Open Energy Day. A great opportunity to discover up close how sustainable heat from deep beneath Delft is used to heat faculty buildings and student homes on the TU Delft Campus!

Clean Energy, Impressive Results

In Delft, we are literally sitting on top of a clean energy source. Geothermal energy is not only sustainable; it is already making a direct impact on reducing our fossil energy consumption right now:

  • Drastic Gas Savings: In our very first weeks, we already saved 300,000 m³ of natural gas (a reduction of more than 60%). That equals the annual gas consumption of over 200 households.

  • CO₂- Reduction: This switch immediately resulted in savings of over 500 tons of CO₂- emissions.

  • Extremely Efficient: To pump the heat up, we use 100% green electricity. For every unit of electricity put in, we get up to 20 units of heat in return during peak moments!

What Does This Mean for Delft?

Geothermal energy has the potential to supply up to 30% of the municipality of Delft with sustainable heat in the future. We currently heat the buildings on the TU Delft Campus and DUWO student housing (equivalent to approximately 5,000 households). At the end of 2026, we will start delivering heat to another 6,000 homes in the Voorhof and Buitenhof neighborhoods!

Come See for Yourself on Saturday, September 19!

Location: P5 Rotterdamseweg / Cornelis Drebbelweg 1, Delft
From the top floor of parking building P5 on the TU Delft Campus, our experts will guide you through the world of Delft's heating system. Discover how the geothermal source, heat pump station, and high-temperature storage work together. Ofcourse we’ll also be happy to answer all your questions.
