Inholland University of Applied Sciences becomes first major commercial client to join Delft Heating Network

22 January 2025

Delft Heating Network has reached a significant milestone: following in the footsteps of local housing associations, the network has welcomed its first major commercial client. Inholland University of Applied Sciences is the first large customer outside the founding housing sector to receive heat through the innovative network—marking a major step forward in expanding Delft’s sustainable heat supply.

Expanding the Network

Delft Heating Network was established to supply 6,000 social housing properties managed by housing associations Woonbron, Vidomes, Stedelink, and DUWO with affordable, low-carbon heat over the coming years. A further several thousand homes in the Voorhof and Buitenhof districts are set to follow. Connecting Inholland University demonstrates that the network is ready for wider rollout, with commercial organisations actively making the shift towards sustainable energy.

Affordable Heat for All

The partnership between NetVerder, InWarmte, Geothermie Delft, and the housing associations is built on clear commitments regarding affordability and sustainability. For major commercial consumers like Inholland, the heating network delivers both environmental benefits and a stable, predictable cost structure.

Reinoud Hilhorst, Project Developer at InWarmte, noted: “It makes complete sense that major commercial partners like Inholland are joining the initial housing associations in making the switch. In this next phase, Delft Heating Network is paving the way for other organisations as well. This reinforces that the heating network is a scalable, future-proof alternative to gas-fired heating systems.”

A Sustainable Alternative

Operated by NetVerder, the network will soon draw geothermal energy from deep beneath Delft. The heat will be supplied by Geothermie Delft (GTD), which will also serve the TU Delft Campus via its existing heating grid. During peak periods, the system can draw on auxiliary heat sources to ensure continuity.

A Step Closer to a Carbon-Neutral Delft

Connecting Inholland University represents a crucial leap in Delft’s energy transition. The network has been designed with ample capacity to connect further homes, businesses, and public institutions in the future.

About Delft Heating Network

Delft Heating Network is a joint initiative involving the Municipality of Delft, housing associations DUWO, Stedelink, Vidomes, and Woonbron, alongside energy partners NetVerder, InWarmte, and Geothermie Delft. Powered by local geothermal heat, the project delivers a reliable, affordable, and eco-friendly alternative to traditional heating systems, directly supporting Delft’s ambition to become carbon-neutral by 2050.
