Delft is building a new heating network – but how does it work?

11 July 2025

An interview with Maaike Zwart, Councillor for Sustainability, Ruud Cuijpers, Project Leader at Netverder, and Rass Butt, CEO of Geothermie Delft.

Work has been progressing rapidly at Geothermie Delft in recent times, with the above-ground facilities becoming increasingly visible. The delivery of sustainable heat to both the campus and the city is drawing ever closer. To supply the Voorhof and Buitenhof neighbourhoods, Netverder is currently hard at work laying the heating network—a extensive grid of pipes designed to transport sustainable heat directly to people's homes. Construction is now underway, and thousands of households will be connected over the coming years. But what exactly is a district heating network?

In this video by Omroep Delft, several key figures explain how the entire energy puzzle fits together, including Maaike Zwart (Councillor for Sustainability), Ruud Cuijpers (Project Leader at Netverder), and Rass Butt (Director of Geothermie Delft).
